Stress Misconceptions

The idea of eliminating stress is often treated in a very romantic light: bring out the candles, relax in a warm bath, rid yourself of your sorrow. But in truth these things are only masking the problem and sometimes making it worse.

And here is why:

1) Candles are fine, and they can be great for creating a romantic atmosphere, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that plunging yourself into darkness with only candlelight for company is a good idea. For one thing, dark rooms become even darker, and for another, candles cast ominous shadows and this might have a negative effect, subconsciously sending your mood into a deeper spiral of sadness.

2) Warm baths are OK now and again, and yes they can be soothing, but watch out. It’s a well known fact that warm temperatures can increase a person’s anger, which isn’t exactly what you need when you’re trying to cheer yourself up.

Instead, why not go for a run? The fresh air will do you good. Or, failing that, give a friend a ring on that old-fashioned device called the telephone. Having a chat with someone can do wonders.

But better than all of them, why not have a laugh? Having a laugh is proven to be a great way of relieving tension if you’ve had a hard day sorting out a shop fitting display or arguing with a friend.

Most of all, talk about it. The sooner you do that the sooner you might be able to get it to go away.

Community Gardens

Growing and digging in the great outdoors can be an absolute wonder cure for stress, but it can also be a serious stress generator. One way that I have found to balance the two is working on a community allotment. This is a extra large plot at the allotment site where a group of people gather every Sunday and tend a large selection of communal beds. One of the reasons that it works so well is because you don’t have to do everything yourself. Depending on the type of person that you are you will find different types of gardening jobs relaxing and other ones will be completely stressful. Some people absolutely love to go around with the watering can giving thirsty plants a drink, others like digging, others find weeding to be one of the most calming activities ever invented. The beauty is that you don’t have to do everything yourself. There was a great utopian philosopher called Charles Fourier, who believed deeply in cooperation and that different people were suited to different types of labour, it is only when you were doing the type of labour that you were unsuited for that your happiness and the function of society broke down. This type of cooperation is fundamental to the relief of stress at a community allotment. I will always treasure the great conversations that I have while working with others, I end up talking about everything from the best lead generation companies to my favourite courgette recipe. Great for stress relief!
