Stress Misconceptions

April 30th, 2011 posted by admin

The idea of eliminating stress is often treated in a very romantic light: bring out the candles, relax in a warm bath, rid yourself of your sorrow. But in truth these things are only masking the problem and sometimes making it worse.

And here is why:

1) Candles are fine, and they can be great for creating a romantic atmosphere, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that plunging yourself into darkness with only candlelight for company is a good idea. For one thing, dark rooms become even darker, and for another, candles cast ominous shadows and this might have a negative effect, subconsciously sending your mood into a deeper spiral of sadness.

2) Warm baths are OK now and again, and yes they can be soothing, but watch out. It’s a well known fact that warm temperatures can increase a person’s anger, which isn’t exactly what you need when you’re trying to cheer yourself up.

Instead, why not go for a run? The fresh air will do you good. Or, failing that, give a friend a ring on that old-fashioned device called the telephone. Having a chat with someone can do wonders.

But better than all of them, why not have a laugh? Having a laugh is proven to be a great way of relieving tension if you’ve had a hard day sorting out a shop fitting display or arguing with a friend.

Most of all, talk about it. The sooner you do that the sooner you might be able to get it to go away.
